Implant Supported Overdentures

Implant Supported Overdentures

When it comes to replacing a patient's teeth, dentists now have several options available, including conventional dentures that sit on the gums, dental implants, overdentures and more. Each method has its own pros and cons and suitability is on a case-by-case basis. For replacing a full set of lower or upper teeth, one of the more stable methods are overdentures. We offer overdentures at all three of our Serenity Dental clinics.

What are overdentures?

Locator overdentures are essentially dentures (false teeth) held in place by up to five small holes which ‘snap’ on to dental implants (small screws or ‘locators’ inserted in your gums). Since they provide significant stability and retention by snapping into place, overdentures are often considered to be a better alternative to traditional dentures.

Benefits of overdentures

  • Easier to eat
Since an overdenture snaps into place, the denture wearer has more comfort and control when eating. They can bite down harder and don’t have to worry about the dentures coming out of place.
  • Better speech
Since dentures are more secure and don’t become loose, it’s easier for the denture wearer to speak.
  • Aesthetic
Overdentures contribute to maintaining your face’s natural appearance. Without them, individuals with missing teeth can experience muscle loss and sagging in their face.

How to look after your overdentures

To ensure longevity of your overdentures, it’s important to maintain and regularly clean your implants and dentures. Failure to keep your implants clean and healthy can lead to gum infection, which can eventually lead to the implants failing themselves. Fortunately, looking after your overdentures is quite easy.

  • Remove and brush your dentures after each meal
  • Clean your implants daily and rinse your mouth to finish
  • Soak your overdentures overnight
  • 6-month dental check-ups
