Root canal therapy
If you’re experiencing continuous, throbbing pain and discomfort while chewing, tooth discolouration or extreme sensitivity to hot or cold, then suffer no more.
The dentists at Serenity Dental CQ are experts in saving teeth – and bringing an end to pain caused by inflammation or infection within a tooth – using root canal therapy.
What is endodontics?
Endodontics is the area of dentistry relating to the health of the pulp and roots of your tooth.
The goal of endodontics is to save your natural tooth, primarily in the form of root canal therapy which is a safe way to address an infected tooth and prevent future re-infection.
Root canal treatment typically starts with an x-ray of the tooth to determine the shape of the root canals and whether any infection is present in the bone around the tooth.
Local anaesthetic is then used before:
- Making an opening in the decayed tooth
- Carefully and meticulously removing the infected dental pulp (the blood and nerve supply to the tooth)
- Disinfecting and cleaning the inside of the tooth
- Inserting a sterile filling
- Sealing the opening
A small post may be inserted into the root canals for extra support, if deemed necessary by your dentist, along with cementing a new artificial crown on the surface of the rebuilt tooth that is used for chewing.
Signs you may need root canal treatment
Infected or badly damaged teeth are regularly saved by root canal therapy.
Inflammation and infection typically results from bacteria multiplying inside the tooth, but the root cause can be varied including gum disease, deep decay, cracked fillings or trauma.
Occasionally there are no obvious symptoms indicating that root canal therapy may be needed, which reinforces the importance of regular dental check-ups, however common signs include:
- Pimples on the gums
- Significant decay or darkening of the tooth or gums
- Severe toothache when chewing or biting
- Swollen or tender gums
- Strong sensitivity to hot or cold
Why invest in root canal therapy?
When it comes to biting or chewing, a natural tooth will function better than an artificial tooth.
More complex dental procedures are also often required after losing a tooth, such as replacing the missing tooth with an artificial one.
