Crown and Bridge

Enhancing your smile

Dental bridges and dental crowns can play a pivotal role in restoring your smile – and your confidence!

A dental bridge procedure is effectively used to fill a gap created by a missing tooth (or missing teeth), which not only has aesthetic value but can also improve your ability to chew or speak, restore or maintain your natural bite, help avoid sunken cheeks and prevent adjacent teeth from tilting or drifting.

Dental crowns can reinforce weak teeth while also improving their appearance, including any that are fractured or considerably decayed, as well as be used to strengthen a tooth to accommodate a dental bridge.

If you think you may require dental crown or bridge treatments, please contact the Serenity Dental clinic for a dental consultation. A caring and experienced dentist will listen to your concerns, answer all your questions and conduct a thorough examination of your teeth and jaw bone, which might include taking x-rays, to help plan a customised dental treatment.

Any decay underneath leaking old fillings, dental restorations or fractures can be taken care of first before determining the necessity of a dental crown/bridge.

Rest assured that at Serenity Dental CQ, full ceramic crowns and bridges are available in a wide range of shades to match your natural teeth.

The convenience of same-day crowns

Crowns and ceramic fillings can now be made at Serenity Dental CQ without the need for multiple dentist appointments, due to the dental clinic’s recent investment in state-of-the-art technology.

Why is it important to replace missing teeth?

Apart from the obvious functions of chewing and biting, missing teeth can have other significant effects – including on facial appearance and speech.

Missing teeth should be replaced for the following reasons:

  • Improved appearance and speech
  • Prevent stresses causing damage to other teeth
  • Prevent the teeth near the gap from changing position
  • Maintain the natural bite
  • Improve chewing ability

Based on your dental and medical history, x-ray examinations of your teeth and jaws and an oral examination, the dentists at Serenity Dental CQ will recommend the best treatment for you.

Your tooth might need a root canal filling, and perhaps a post or foundation, before crown or bridge treatment.

What are dental crowns and dental bridges?

The outermost layer of each tooth is made of enamel which is quite strong, making teeth difficult to break. However, a tooth can be severely weakened and put at high risk of falling apart through trauma (such as a fall, biting on something hard may chip or fracture of the teeth) or tooth decay.

A dental crown is often the best option to save a tooth and strengthen it, by fitting over the prepared existing tooth surface. Crowns are custom made to match the size, shape and colour of your original teeth … or to create a new smile altogether!

Dental bridges are designed to span over any gaps you may have in your mouth due to missing or lost teeth. Each bridge uses two natural teeth as anchors for one or more prosthetic teeth called a “pontic”. Together, these elements form one solid piece that replaces the gap created by a missing tooth or missing teeth.

What to expect at your dental crown or bridge appointment?

For a dental crown procedure, the area surrounding the tooth is numbed with a local anaesthetic and the tooth is reduced by 1-2 millimetres. After this preparation, a digital scan is taken and a crown is designed, then made.

The permanent crown will be placed over the reshaped tooth to check the fit and colour match. Next, the crown is cemented to the tooth with dental cement.

Dental crowns are designed to feel comfortable and natural in your mouth.

The steps for the preparation and fitting of a dental bridge are similar to those for a crown. The only difference is that the teeth on either side of the gap are shaped by drilling.

The bridge will span the space, over these teeth, which serve as anchors for the replacement tooth (or teeth) attached to the framework of the adjacent crowns.
